Matthew McConaughey is branded 'irresponsible' after refusing to back Democrats and urging Americans to vote independent in US midterms
Musician Howi Spangler told the Texas-born actor 'we're at a critical moment', warning that 'Trump-ism' is on the ballot. McConaughey, 56, posted a six-minute video on Sunday as early voting in Texas was about to begin. He said an independent vote is not wasted and insisted he was endorsing only 'fairness and reality'. Critics attacked the timing, with Democrat James Talarico narrowly ahead of Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race.
Former senator Joe Manchin called the actor 'absolutely so accurate' on independents.
McConaughey praised Manchin's Independent Leadership Council, which recruits independent candidates.
The video has sparked speculation that McConaughey could run for president in 2028.
