Matthew McConaughey urges Americans to back Independent candidates in the midterms as speculation grows over a presidential run

In a six-minute video posted to X, the Interstellar star, 56, took aim at the idea that an independent vote is wasted, asking: 'How's that unwasted vote been working out for you?' He insisted he was endorsing no candidate or party, only 'fairness and reality'. A Gallup poll found 45 per cent of Americans identify as independents. Political commentators read it as groundwork for a 2028 bid.

McConaughey considered running for Texas governor in 2021 but decided he wasn't ready.

The video drew fierce social media backlash, dividing fans ahead of November's vote.

'Independent is the original road,' he said, claiming Americans came before both parties.
