Melania Trump brokers a ceasefire for the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, where elderly residents are eating GARDEN WEEDS
The truce is due to begin on 29 October, and the Kremlin confirmed the deal on Friday. Russia and Ukraine are also set to hold peace talks next month. Just 2,000 people remain trapped in Oleshky, down from around 24,000 before the war, and most are elderly. 'Without my intervention,' the First Lady said, aid and evacuation would have been 'impossible'.
Ukrainian troops have been dropping food parcels into Oleshky by drone to prevent starvation.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation in the city this week as 'genocide'.
Critics note that Pope Leo XIV phoned Vladimir Putin a week earlier asking for the same ceasefire.
