Ukraine strikes a Russian plant just days before Melania Trump's ceasefire in Oleshky is due to begin

Around 2,000 people, mostly elderly and including about 50 children, remain trapped in Russian-occupied Oleshky. Ukraine's chief negotiator Dmytro Lubinets says the truce will start on Tuesday across the Kherson region. The White House says the aid mission follows on 29 October. Melania Trump insists the deal would have been 'impossible' without her intervention.

Pope Leo XIV phoned Putin on 16 October to press for the same Oleshky ceasefire.

Mines must be cleared from the route before any aid reaches the town, Lubinets warns.

About 90 per cent of Oleshky flooded after the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed.
