Melania Trump's ceasefire in Ukraine's Oleshky holds for 30 hours with no breaches as the US plans fresh peace talks
Devastation in Russian-occupied Oleshky, where a local ceasefire took effect at 3am to clear the way for an aid mission for the 6,000 people, including 200 children, trapped and desperately short of food and medicine.Melania Trump as Ukraine's Dmytro Lubinets said Kyiv is honouring its commitments despite Russian missiles striking the city's Southern Bridge and metro infrastructure the same morning the truce…
Yana Lantratova, Russia's human rights commissioner, and Ukraine's ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets both confirmed on Wednesday that the Oleshky ceasefire had gone 30 hours without a single violation, with Russian forces ceasing to shell Kherson from 4am. First lady Melania Trump spent weeks serving as the "exclusive intermediary" between Moscow and Kyiv, earning the confidence of each side before officials from both countries met in Belarus on October 23 to sign the agreement. The truce, which runs until 22:59 on November 1, is the first significant ceasefire to hold since Russia's invasion began more than four years ago.
Roughly 2,000 residents remain in the frontline city; those who leave will be met, housed and supported by Ukrainian government agencies.
The ceasefire zone has widened past Oleshky itself, now covering humanitarian convoy routes across the broader Kherson region.
Pope Leo XIV also called on Putin and Zelensky this month to open Oleshky to humanitarian aid, and Zelensky publicly thanked Melania Trump for halting the fighting there.
