Melania Trump's Oleshky ceasefire in Ukraine holds for 30 hours without a single incident as demining begins
Melania Trump, as residents of Oleshky reportedly surviving on weeds await the aid deliveries that demining of the planned evacuation route is now making possible.
Demining is now under way along the planned evacuation route out of Oleshky, the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city where Melania Trump brokered a localised ceasefire that took effect at 3am Tuesday. Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Russia's Yana Lantratova both confirmed zero incidents in 30 hours, with both officials physically present on the ground as guarantors. An estimated 2,000 civilians remain trapped in Oleshky amid food and medical shortages, with reports many are surviving on weeds.
Residents fear Russia will divert evacuees to Crimea or Russian territory rather than Ukrainian-controlled areas, despite the truce terms.
Zelenskyy said there have been no massive attacks on regional capital Kherson since the ceasefire took hold, with locals venturing outside for the first time in months.
Putin called Oleshky a 'Russian settlement' during a phone call on 27 October, despite it remaining Ukrainian territory under international law.
