Melania Trump secures a ceasefire in starving Ukrainian city Oleshky, where elderly residents have been eating garden weeds

The Kremlin has confirmed the truce, which is due to begin on 29 October, and says it is working with Ukraine on the timing of evacuations. Both sides are to halt military action so aid can reach the city and civilians can leave through a safe passageway. Only around 2,000 people remain from a pre-war population of 24,000. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy described the situation this week as 'genocide'.

Melania Trump said: 'I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine.'

Ukrainian troops have been dropping food parcels onto the blockaded town by drone.

Russian forces seized Oleshky in the first days of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
