Met chief condemns 'vile' racist abuse of hijab-wearing officer after her award for championing women in policing

PC Fiona Shaik Umar won the Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award at Wednesday's Police Federation conference for leading the Hijab Project. Sir Mark Rowley said the honour unleashed an 'online tirade' of racist, anti-Islam and misogynistic abuse. A 2024 photo of her holding a weapon also resurfaced and fuelled the attacks. She protects MPs in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command.

Others online noted the weapon in the photo had no magazine fitted.

Rowley: 'They just saw that she is a female Muslim officer who wears a hijab.'

She joined the force after her daughter asked her: 'Can women like you do that job?'
