Met Commissioner slams 'awful abuse' of award-winning Muslim officer after an AI image put a suicide bomb on her

Pc Fiona Shaik Umar, the first hijab-wearing officer in her policing area, received the Outstanding Contribution to Women in Policing Award at the Police Federation Annual Conference on Wednesday. Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the honour set off an 'online tirade' of racist, anti-Islam and misogynistic abuse. 'The stuff out there is just vile,' he said. He warned that female and minority ethnic officers are more likely to be targeted.

Umar is an operational officer protecting MPs who face abuse and threats.

Rowley: 'This is a vile world to be a public servant in.'

He said it angers him that her celebration was ruined 'not for the first time'.
