MI5 spied on NHS founder Nye Bevan for more than 20 years, EVEN while he was a Cabinet minister, secret files reveal

One MI5 report on Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan was addressed to Anthony Blunt, who was later exposed as a Soviet agent himself. Papers released to the National Archives show MI5 opened a file on the Ebbw Vale MP in 1933 over his ties to leading communists. The MI5 director-general grew so alarmed by Bevan's contact with a known Russia spy that he warned Clement Attlee in No 10. The watch on Bevan lasted until his death in 1960.

At a 1934 Montreal rally, Bevan reportedly pictured 'a united Europe under Soviet rule'.

A 1954 lunch with the Soviet ambassador 'went off very badly' over Bevan's Welsh accent.

An MI5 review after his death called the file 'remarkably tame'.
