US Democrat backs Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race two days before the midterms as her staff quit
Sen. Dan Sullivan (left) and fellow Senate candidate Dan Sullivan, whose presence on Alaska's ballot prompted the Trump administration to file a lawsuit it claimed risked voter confusion — a case a federal judge dismissed as "infeasible" after ballots were already cast.
Democratic Representative Haley Stevens, who lost the Michigan Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, endorsed Republican Mike Rogers on Sunday after El-Sayed told her she was no longer welcome at his campaign events. The rift centred on Israel, with Stevens accusing El-Sayed of backing an advert she called antisemitic. Her chief of staff Justin German and many other staffers quit immediately, calling the move "shocking and heartbreaking."
Trump called the defection "BIG" on Truth Social, urged Stevens to join the GOP, and called El-Sayed a "jihadist lunatic" at an Iowa rally.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish, condemned Stevens' endorsement as a "despicable betrayal."
Stevens told reporters she is considering converting to Judaism and said: 'I don't belong in Abdul's campaign.'
