Microsoft offers buyouts to 60,000 staff in Britain and beyond, a QUARTER of its workforce, while AI spending soars

Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the 'Voluntary Exit Offer' in a Monday blog post, with eligibility limited to staff at level 70 and below. Divisions facing cuts include Copilot, AI experiences, Xbox and Windows + Devices. Capital expenditure, driven largely by AI, has climbed to nearly $190 billion this year. The company's shares reached an all-time high this month, with quarterly results due on Wednesday.
Microsoft already axed 4,800 jobs in July, many of them at Xbox.
Coleman admitted: 'The Voluntary Exit Offer is new for us. We'll learn from it.'
Amazon has shed around 30,000 workers as it shifts toward AI tools.
