Italy is to send 500 troops to 'defend Milan' as Chanel and Dior strip windows after a weekend of looting
Several hundred hooded rioters, many thought to be minors, hijacked a peaceful cost-of-living march and ransacked Decathlon, Arc'teryx and Vodafone stores. Confcommercio Milano chief Marco Barbieri says the damage now tops one million euros. Ministers are expected to approve the deployment at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Giorgia Meloni is reportedly weighing longer preventive detention for young offenders.
Matteo Salvini posted online: 'From words to action: 500 more troops to defend Milan.'
Giorgia Meloni said protest is a right, but 'setting our cities ablaze is not'.
About 50 demonstrators were detained and at least two police officers were injured.
