Minicab trade chief says TfL plan to make all newly licensed London private hire cars electric from 2028 is 'not achievable'
Steve Wright, chair of the Licensed Private Hire Car Association, warns most drivers cannot charge at home and on-street charging is 'extremely expensive'. Transport for London wants petrol, diesel and every type of hybrid barred from new private hire licences from 3 July 2028. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles would get until July 2030. The consultation closes on 2 December 2026.
The rules would cover Uber, Bolt and Lyft cars as well as traditional minicabs.
Cars aged 10 years or older would lose their licences from March 2027.
Only 35.5 per cent of London's 94,661 private hire vehicles are fully battery-electric.
