Ministers consider banning the sale of smart glasses to 'certain users' after women are secretly filmed on nights out

Safeguarding minister Satvir Kaur told a Westminster Hall debate that the government is actively looking at ways to curb smart glasses "in certain settings" and limit who can buy them to "certain users", with that work proceeding "at pace" ahead of Christmas. Liberal Democrat MP Marie Goldman warned offenders are exploiting legal gaps to profit from the footage, calling it 'monetised misogyny'.

Liberal Democrat MP Anna Sabine, who secured the debate, said women are 'waking up after nights out to find videos of themselves have gone viral online'.

Under existing harassment law, a perpetrator must repeatedly target the same individual — which means covertly filming many different women on separate occasions breaks no law.

NHS England and the Department for Education are separately examining wearable technology in certain settings, Kaur confirmed.
