More than 1,000 migrating birds were killed or injured after slamming into Chicago's skyscrapers in a single weekend
Annette Prince, director of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, said volunteers had birds 'hitting the glass windows over our heads'. About 25 volunteers searched downtown Chicago and Northwestern University's Evanston campus from 6am to sunset on Saturday. More than five million migratory birds poured into the city on Friday alone. Advocates now want a Bird-Friendly Building Design Ordinance passed.
The group's hotline rang every 30 seconds on Saturday, Prince said.
Volunteers pick up more than 10,000 dead birds every year from window strikes.
McCormick Place cut its bird collisions by 95% after a mass strike in October 2023.
