More than 500 are injured and one is killed in Taiwan as Typhoon Champi sweeps past towards China

The dead man was swept into the sea by huge waves on Liuqiu Island, off the city of Kaohsiung. Most of the injured were hurt in road crashes or hit by trees and debris brought down by the storm. Tens of thousands of homes lost power and at least 1,747 people fled their homes. Much of Taiwan, Taipei included, remains largely shut, with flights still grounded.

Champi peaked at nearly 185mph earlier this week, the strongest storm of 2026.

Rising water at Wanli Creek Landslide Dam in Hualien forced downstream evacuations.

Japan warned of 40-foot waves in exposed parts of Okinawa.
