Mother and daughter are killed in suspected grizzly attack on a 'casual walk' near their home in Bella Coola, Canada
Jennifer Balcarras, 48, who worked as an art therapist, and her 20-year-old daughter Selah Reed were discovered dead on the Snooka West Trail near Bella Coola, British Columbia — Balcarras on Monday, Reed after conservation officers and Mounted Police extended the search into Tuesday. Concern was first raised when Balcarras failed to appear for an online meet-up Saturday night, triggering a wellness check that brought officers to her vehicle at the trailhead.
Josh Balcarras, brother of the mother of four, said the trail was just a five-minute drive from home and 'not in a remote area' — 'just a casual walk.'
The attack occurred in the same region where, last November, a grizzly bear mauled 11 people, the youngest of whom were nine years old.
Family described Balcarras and Reed as 'two peas in a pod' who loved hiking and knew the trail well.
