Michael Mullins, who led Stretford Grammar School for 17 years, was dragged beneath a black Volvo XC90 for more than a mile before being thrown clear and dying at the roadside, a murder trial has heard.

Simon Richardson, 35, is accused of knowingly dragging Stretford Grammar School headteacher Michael Mullins, 56, beneath his black Volvo XC90 for 1.3 miles after striking him as he cycled home in Warburton on April 20. Prosecutors allege Richardson reached speeds of 60mph, stopped once and tried to dislodge Mullins from under the car, then drove on anyway before running over him again and fleeing. Andrew Besant-Roberts found the dying father-of-two on a grass verge in Lymm, Cheshire, after following the blood trail from a damaged bicycle left in the road.

Richardson, of no fixed address, denies both murder and manslaughter at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester.

Besant-Roberts said the trail 'started to weave from left to right' for hundreds of yards before he spotted Mullins lying unconscious but still breathing.

Mullins had led Stretford Grammar School for 17 years and was cycling home to Northwich when he was struck.
