Serbian state TV anchor apologises on air for years of pro-Vucic coverage after a student movement wins the election

Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia's strongman leader of 14 years, conceded defeat to the student-led Student List movement on Sunday after it claimed 141 of 250 parliamentary seats, ending his Serbian Progressive Party's grip on power. Ilija Srdanovic, a cardiologist who fronted the winning slate, urged supporters to "remain dignified" amid chaotic scenes in Belgrade. Vucic was reportedly talked down from attempting a violent coup after the result became clear.
Protesters stormed the offices of a pro-Vucic tabloid whose editor in chief refused to apologise and called the police.
Novak Djokovic praised the students at a Basel press conference, saying they had created a "sense of pride" beyond Serbia's borders.
The new movement is leaderless and its policies described as vague, with weeks of legal process still needed before a government can form.
