The NAACP has assembled a coalition of nine civil rights organisations to file a federal lawsuit against Trump's DHS, ICE, DOJ and FBI, seeking a court order to keep armed agents away from polling stations during November's midterm elections. The complaint accuses the administration of breaching Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act by fostering an atmosphere of fear, particularly among Black, Latino and Asian voters. The White House said it had no intention of sending ICE agents to polling locations.
Democratic senators this week questioned FBI Director Kash Patel, who said agents would attend polls 'if there's a violation of law.'
This is at least the second lawsuit of its kind, following an earlier legal challenge brought by the city of Denver and Latino organisations.
Plaintiffs warn minority voters fear 'arrest, detention, surveillance or use of force' simply for turning up to vote.
