Nasa marks Halloween with its spookiest space images, from a jack-o'-lantern Sun to a screaming skull
A composite of Halloween-themed cosmic images released by NASA Universe, including a turquoise-green evil eye nebula some 8,000 light-years from Earth.
Nasa has released a gallery of eerily familiar shapes captured across the cosmos to mark Halloween, drawing on images from multiple observatories and missions spanning years of sky surveys. The collection includes a sun photographed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory whose active magnetic regions form glowing eyes and a grinning mouth, and a planetary nebula roughly 8,000 light years away that resembles a turquoise evil eye.
A screaming skull lurks in the Perseus Cluster, while planet Fomalhaut b's orbit reveals a vast red eye shape.
Mars also features in the haunted tour, with one image seeming to show an enormous face carved into the planet's surface.
Three of Nasa's most powerful observatories — Chandra, IXPE and DECaPS2 — combined data to capture a ghostly magnetic 'hand' reaching through space.
