The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a galaxy cluster that looks eerily like a grinning face — and the science behind it is stranger than the illusion. The cluster, designated SDSS J1038+4849, shows two bright galaxies as "eyes" and a sweeping curved arc as a "smile," formed not by any physical structure but by gravitational lensing bending light from galaxies far behind it.

The curved "smile" is light from distant background galaxies warped and stretched by the cluster's enormous mass and dark matter.
