Nationwide is to cut 275 more jobs on top of 600 axed in June after its £2.9bn Virgin Money takeover

Mortgage staff, HR, finance, communications and customer operations teams are all in the firing line, and staff were told on Wednesday. Bosses say the cuts will 'remove duplication' after Nationwide absorbed more than 7,000 Virgin Money workers. Members were never given a vote on the controversial deal. Nationwide insists the cuts have nothing to do with artificial intelligence.

A spokesperson said no customer-facing staff are at risk and branches stay open until 2030.

Nationwide's total workforce now stands at roughly 27,000, with its head office in Swindon.

Barclays, having pushed further into AI, announced days earlier that 5,000 jobs would go as a result.
