Nearly 1,000 are arrested across France as 70,000 police fire tear gas and water cannon at masked rioters
Among those detained, some were reportedly found to be carrying fireworks, steel balls, AK-47 rifles and Scorpion submachine guns. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said roughly 500 rioters had assembled at the back of the Paris march and warned that the arrest total 'will increase'. Central Paris took on the appearance of a city under lockdown, with museums shuttered and more than 20 metro stations closed. In Marseille, two jewellery shops were looted.
Ministers deployed 10,000 more officers after admitting they underestimated last weekend's unrest.
Masked youths smashed car dealership windows at Porte de Vincennes before police baton-charged them.
Protesters chanted 'Down with the state, the police and the fascists!' as clashes erupted.
