Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned the arrest tally 'will increase significantly' and pointed to black-clad 'ultra-left' groups as the source of the violence. The interior ministry put the number of marchers at 410,000, while unions estimated 800,000. A force of 70,000 officers was mobilised to prevent a recurrence of the previous weekend's disorder. In Paris, masked protesters threw projectiles at police near Porte de Vincennes and attempted to break into a car dealership.

The preceding Saturday's unrest left around 2,000 shops looted and thousands of people in custody.

In Grenoble, roughly 400 'black bloc' anarchists attacked police 'with anything they could find'.

A man in Toulouse suffered serious injuries and reportedly lost fingers in an explosion.
