Nearly 1,000 Toledo residents flee their homes after a US chemical tank blast as the mayor warns it could explode AGAIN

The leaking tank at MC Tank Terminal on Progress Avenue contained glycidyl methacrylate, a substance used in the manufacture of plastics and paints that becomes carcinogenic with prolonged exposure. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz warned that the tank might stay at risk of explosion for up to 12 hours. A shelter-in-place order covering a 3-mile radius extended to Lake Erie neighbourhoods and reached across the Michigan state line. Thick fog prevented drones from tracking the plume.

A Lucas County sheriff's deputy fell ill and drove himself to hospital.

Evacuees were sheltered at an elementary school and aboard buses in a Meijer car park.

The city's emergency page stated that no explosion had occurred, directly contradicting the mayor.
