Judge Carli Kierny handed Duane 'Keffe D' Davis, 63, a 40-years-to-life sentence on Tuesday for orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed Tupac Shakur near the Las Vegas Strip. Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was convicted in August of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon after jurors deliberated for just three hours. His own boasts — in media interviews and a 2019 memoir — ultimately supplied prosecutors with the evidence to convict him. Davis says he will appeal the verdict.
'You don't get to take a man from his family and just walk away from it,' Judge Kierny told Davis as she delivered the sentence.
Davis admitted in his memoir to passing the gun to the backseat of the white Cadillac, though he did not fire the fatal shots himself.
Davis is the only person ever charged over Shakur's murder, which went unsolved for nearly three decades and became one of the most notorious cold cases in music history.
