Nearly seven in ten Scottish firms say the SNP Government does not understand business, damning survey reveals

The University of Strathclyde's Fraser of Allander Institute says the findings paint an increasingly "negative picture" of the relationship between Scottish business and government. A survey of 200 firms found 69% believe ministers do not understand the business environment, while 71% say the Scottish Government fails to engage effectively with them on policy. Business rates reform is companies' top priority, with a third demanding action in the upcoming Budget. Nearly all firms — 99% — cited economic uncertainty as a major concern.
The SNP's failure to engage is hitting costs: 82% of firms saw total costs climb this quarter, with 86% expecting further rises.
Sales turned positive for the first time since Q2 2024, but future expectations weakened and political uncertainty remains rampant.
Only one in five firms say they can effectively shape Scottish Government policy — up from just 14% last year, but still a damning indictment.
