Officers fatally shot 17-year-old Oscar Granados Colindres in Wappingers Falls on June 27 after he jumped down from a bridge overpass where police had spent 50 minutes in negotiation with him. New York Attorney General Letitia James this week released bodycam footage showing an officer speaking to Colindres in Spanish, asking about his sisters and urging him to stay strong, before the teenager ran toward officers and at least ten shots were fired within a second.
Colindres was allegedly carrying a knife and was reported to be suicidal following rape accusations and being forced from his home.
His mother believes he would still be alive had trained crisis intervention specialists responded instead of police, and his family disputes the suggestion that he posed a threatening physical threat at the moment he was shot.
The state Attorney General's investigation into the shooting is continuing, and audio from one officer's bodycam was redacted before the footage was made public.
