New York's Catholic archdiocese agrees to pay $800m to 1,300 clergy abuse survivors, some now in their eighties
Each victim can take a lump sum of at least $250,000, or seek a bigger payout after their abuse is reviewed. Lawyers warned survivors that if they refused, the Archdiocese of New York would declare bankruptcy and leave them with far less. Archbishop Ronald Hicks says the deal is not final until all sides sign in early November. Only the Los Angeles archdiocese has paid more.
New York's 2019 Child Victims Act opened the door to litigation that has now run for over seven years.
Archbishop Hicks told priests: 'We are on the verge of being able to, please God, bring some measure of healing.'
Holdouts who reject the deal would split just $20 million between them.
