New York's Catholic archdiocese is set to pay $800m to 1,300 abuse survivors, but only if every victim signs
Lawyers have warned victims that if they refuse the deal, the Archdiocese of New York will declare bankruptcy, likely shrinking payouts and adding years of litigation. Each plaintiff could take a lump sum of at least $250,000. Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks said the church is 'on the verge' of bringing healing. Holdouts would split a $20 million insurer-backed pot evenly.
Some plaintiffs resisted, arguing the deal did not do enough to rectify their harms.
Attorney Trusha Goffe told clients: 'All of the survivors agreed to the revised deal.'
Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling countered on Friday night: 'We are not quite there yet.'
