NHS trust faces prosecution over sepsis deaths of two girls after one was sent home by a 'very junior doctor'

Zadie Ajetunmobi, three, was not given life-saving intravenous antibiotics for more than seven hours at Broomfield Hospital in Essex, and died of sepsis in November 2022. Selina Samarina, two, was discharged in April 2024 and died two days later. The Care Quality Commission is prosecuting Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. It is due at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in December.

The trust had not updated its local sepsis guidance since 2017.

No suitably senior doctor was available for Selina for two-and-a-half hours.

Zadie's parents: 'This is a tragedy from which we will never recover.'
