Hospital trust faces prosecution over sepsis deaths of two girls after one was sent home by a 'very junior doctor'

Zadie Ajetunmobi, three, waited more than seven hours for life-saving antibiotics at Broomfield Hospital in Essex and died within ten hours in November 2022. Selina Samarina, two, who had Down's syndrome, died in April 2024, two days after she was first discharged. The Care Quality Commission is prosecuting Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust on three charges. The trust is due before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in December.

Zadie's family were told local sepsis guidance had not been updated since 2017.

A coroner ruled Zadie's death could have been 'prevented' if staff had followed sepsis guidelines.

Her parents Theo and Rhiannon: 'This is a tragedy from which we will never recover.'
