Nick Knowles, who broke down on Instagram after 27 years hosting DIY SOS, warned a scaled-back version is impossible given the 26,000 volunteers who have taken part.

Nick Knowles, 64, broke down emotionally on Instagram after the final episode of DIY SOS aired on Tuesday, saying the BBC told him any future version would be "smaller and more cost-effective" — a format he insists cannot work. The show, which first aired in 1999, is being shelved as part of the corporation's drive to cut £500 million over three years.

Knowles said he asked directly whether it would return at full scale and was told no — adding 'you can't do that smaller. It is what it is.'

The final episode followed a major renovation in Kidderminster, Worcestershire; other axed shows include Blankety Blank and Live At The Apollo.

The BBC has announced a replacement show, while Knowles paid tribute to the 26,000 volunteers who gave their time across 27 years.
