Nigeria confirms its first Ebola case in Abuja after a woman arriving from Uganda tests positive for the virus

Health Minister Muhammad Pate said authorities are tracing 44 people who came into contact with the patient. She first showed symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja four days later, before being diagnosed. Uganda had earlier been declared free of the virus. The rare Bundibugyo strain has now crossed 9,000 human infections and caused more than 4,300 deaths.

Neighbouring Kenya has now recorded nine cases, all within a single known cluster.

The WHO says no approved vaccine or dedicated treatment exists for Bundibugyo.

Nearly half of all confirmed cases in Congo have died, and the CDC places it behind only one previous Ebola outbreak in its historical rankings.
