Nine fire engines tackle blaze at Fiddler's Ferry decommissioned power station in Warrington
Firefighters from 11 stations tackle a major blaze at the decommissioned Fiddler's Ferry power station, with residents near the Warrington site advised to keep windows and doors closed.
Firefighters drawn from 11 stations are tackling a major fire at the decommissioned Fiddler's Ferry coal-fired power station in Warrington, Cheshire, after flames erupted inside an industrial unit at around 1pm on Thursday. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service says the blaze appears to be confined to a chimney area, with an aerial ladder platform directing water at the flames. Nearby residents have been advised to keep windows and doors closed, and roads around the site have been shut as crews work to bring the fire under control.
Fiddler's Ferry ran for nearly 50 years before closing in 2020 and is now being transformed into a mixed development comprising 860 homes and 101 hectares of employment land.
Nine fire engines are visible at the scene, with crews drawn from across the region to help tackle the blaze.
Developer Peel NRE acquired the site in 2022 and has an active construction programme under way on the land.
