Giana Dettloff, a 19-year-old freshman at North Central College in Naperville, was fatally shot in Bloomington, Illinois, in the early hours of 1 November. She was hit several times in the chest and pelvis and pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting erupted in a shared backyard near Illinois Wesleyan University where between 150 and 200 people had gathered; roughly ten shots were fired, leaving eight others wounded, ranging in age from 16 to 22.

The only daughter of her parents, Dettloff was remembered by family as 'full of life, a sweet girl with a very bright future.'

Those injured included students from Illinois Wesleyan, Illinois State and Quincy universities, as well as teenagers from the Chicago suburbs.

Police Chief Jamal Simington said witnesses had broadly described the shooter or shooters as Black males, and vowed to 'bring them forward for justice.'
