North Korea launched the missiles from the Wonsan area at around 12:30 p.m. local time, with the barrage coming just one day after the US, EU and Australia announced fresh sanctions targeting Pyongyang's weapons development and overseas worker networks. South Korea's military believes the launch likely involved the KN-25 super-large 600mm multiple rocket launcher, which Pyongyang claims can carry tactical nuclear warheads. The missiles flew roughly 250 kilometres and fell outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.
The launch follows a landmine blast on September 21 that wounded three South Korean soldiers, which a joint Seoul-UN probe concluded North Korea planted over a year ago.
Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister, has condemned South Korean demands for an apology as 'despicable' and rejected Seoul's offer of medical equipment.
Thursday's barrage was North Korea's fourth missile test this month alone, with Pyongyang having conducted tests on more than ten separate occasions this year.
