North Korea's Kim Jong-un makes surprise trip into China over new bridge, his first known journey abroad in a year

South Korean officials say Kim took a train from Pyongyang to Sinuiju before arriving in the Chinese border city of Dandong. Chinese premier Li Qiang reportedly travelled to the city too. Neither Pyongyang nor Beijing had confirmed the visit by Saturday evening. On Sunday China marks the anniversary of its entry into the 1950-53 Korean War on the North's side.

The 3km New Yalu River Bridge opened on 15 October, a full dozen years after China completed its construction.

Kim has dispatched up to 16,000 troops in support of Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

Locals once mocked the empty bridge as leading to a North Korean vegetable patch.
