North Korean hackers are blamed for stealing $6.3bn from crypto exchange Binance in just 20 MINUTES in a record heist
Binance halted all withdrawals after a hack through a single engineer's laptop drained an estimated $6.3bn — surpassing the previous record $1.5bn Bybit breach in 2025.Around $3bn of the $6.3bn stolen from Binance has already been frozen, with Tether and Circle locking more than $2.3bn in stablecoin assets connected to the breach.
North Korea's elite TraderTraitor hacking unit siphoned $6.3bn from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains starting at 20:05 GMT on Thursday, with most funds moved in a single 20-minute window. Blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis both attributed the attack with "high confidence" to Pyongyang, and early findings suggest hackers gained access through a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop.
Bitcoin fell over 3% to its lowest level in six weeks, while Coinbase shares dropped 4.8% as markets reacted immediately.
The previous record crypto heist was $1.5bn stolen from Bybit in February 2025 — also blamed on TraderTraitor by the FBI.
