Northern Lights could be visible across central UK again tonight as Met Office warns display is set to strengthen
The Met Office's aurora forecast on X, warning of possible northern lights displays on Sunday and Monday nights, as geomagnetic activity hit 600 nanoteslas on Saturday — three times the threshold needed for sightings…
Met Office senior meteorologist Greg Dewhurst says the aurora borealis will be stronger on Monday night than Sunday, with sightings possible as far south as central England. The display over the weekend lit up skies from Scotland and Northern Ireland to Kent, Surrey, Devon and Hampshire. Londoners face poor odds, with heavy cloud expected to block any views throughout the night.
The aurora was set off by two coronal mass ejections and then a high-speed stream from a coronal hole, with the Met Office forecasting sightings possible until Tuesday, October 14.
Dewhurst warned that long-exposure camera shots can reveal the lights further south than the naked eye can detect, making smartphones in night mode a useful tool for spotters.
Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway and the OM Dark Sky Park near Omagh are among the best spots; the prime viewing window is between 10pm and 2am.
