Trump attacked Norway at a Michigan rally on Sunday after South African jurist Navi Pillay, 85, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on 9 October — a prize Trump has openly campaigned for. The president declared he no longer wanted Norwegian immigrants in the US, saying: "I didn't get the Nobel Prize. So I don't want anybody from Norway."
Norwegian foreign minister Espen Barth Eide reminded Trump the Nobel Committee is "entirely independent" of the Norwegian government.
The Nobel Committee is appointed by Norway's parliament for six-year terms; sitting ministers and lawmakers are barred from membership.
Trump dismissed Pillay, recognised for upholding international law, as "a woman nobody had ever heard of."
