'Not scared to wade in': Badenoch vows to back police and criticises Labour for skipping their conference again

Kemi Badenoch told the Police Federation that 'devastating police failures' like the Henry Nowak case mean the public now see officers as a 'ghost service'. The 18-year-old student was handcuffed as he lay dying after being stabbed in Southampton. She admitted Theresa May was wrong to cut officer numbers and pledged 10,000 more police. The PM's deputy spokeswoman insisted police have the government's 'full backing'.

On bodycam, an officer told the dying Nowak: 'Don't think you have, mate.'

Badenoch on the Tories: 'We're under new management. A lot of the bad players are gone.'

She warned officers there would be no 'massive pay rise' on day one.
