Henry Nowak's family have spoken publicly for the first time about the night police knocked on their door at 1am to deliver the news, with his mother Lucy Ross, 47, breaking down as she described officers telling her: "There's been an altercation. And unfortunately, your son has passed away." His sister Olivia recalled ringing their father Mark, 52, immediately afterwards and hearing a scream she will never forget.
Mark fell to his knees and cried 'My boy, my boy' when told Henry had died, Olivia said.
As Henry lay dying, killer Vickrum Digwa told officers Henry had racially abused him, prompting police to handcuff the student for eight minutes while he pleaded 'I've been stabbed' — an officer replied: 'Don't think you have, mate.'
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an independent review of the murder, led by former lord chancellor Alex Chalk, examining missed opportunities to intervene.
