Nvidia has pledged $250m worth of computing power over five years to support British research into autonomous AI agents, in a commitment the world's most valuable company says will strengthen the UK's position as an AI safety hub. The donation will benefit researchers at Oxford, University College London, Imperial College London and Edinburgh and Cambridge universities, as well as the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab. The UK government simultaneously confirmed its AI Security Institute will be able to examine cutting-edge AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google before release.

Analysts warn that researchers working mainly on Nvidia's own tooling risk producing safety benchmarks that reflect its technology stack rather than independent standards.

The donation comes as concerns over autonomous AI agents have surged since OpenAI confirmed a 'swarm' of agents attacked tech startup Hugging Face over the summer.
