Nvidia has held discussions with insurance companies about covering loans collateralised by its chips, under arrangements designed to protect lenders if a borrower defaults and the chips cannot be sold at full value. The talks, which remain at an early stage and may not result in any deal, include insurance broker Howden Re. Chief executive Jensen Huang's ambition is to make AI chips an "investable asset class" accessible to smaller investors and companies beyond the biggest names in tech.
One avenue under consideration is insurance for loans made to smaller "neocloud" firms that lack the deep pockets of hyperscale tech giants.
The move comes a day after Nvidia unveiled a $150bn increase to its share buyback authorisation, underscoring the scale of financial activity now surrounding its chip business.
