Obama-appointed judge rules Trump's DOJ illegally fired James Comey's daughter Maurene and orders her retroactive reinstatement with back pay
Maurene Comey, whose sacking from her federal prosecutor's post Judge Jesse Furman ruled breached the Administrative Procedure Act and her Fifth Amendment rights, has been awarded back pay and ordered reinstated.James Comey, whose daughter Maurene's dismissal Judge Jesse Furman warned would "unsettle the very equilibrium" of the constitution, was himself fired as FBI director by Trump's attorney general in 2017.
Judge Jesse Furman rejected the administration's claim that career prosecutors can be removed at will, saying it 'flies in the face of nearly two centuries of Supreme Court precedent'. The Justice Department conceded the July 2025 firing had nothing to do with her performance. Maurene Comey will not return to the department and is now a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler. The DOJ says it will appeal.
She prosecuted Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Sean 'Diddy' Combs during a decade in Manhattan.
She claims she was sacked for being the daughter of longtime Trump foe James Comey.
Her personnel file will now record that she resigned, not that she was fired.
