'I'm not concerned': Trump contradicts the FBI over its finding that North Korea stole $6.3bn from Binance in record crypto heist
The FBI warned that those responsible for the Binance raid are converting stolen funds into Ethereum and laundering them through decentralised finance platforms.Kim Jong Un, whose country's TraderTraitor unit carried out the Binance raid using access gained through a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, according to investigators.
Trump flatly contradicted his own FBI on Saturday night, telling reporters at a Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago that he was "not concerned" and that investigators did not yet know if North Korea was behind the hack. The FBI, working alongside the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, had announced just hours earlier that North Korean cyber group TraderTraitor was definitively responsible for draining $6.3bn from Binance in roughly 20 minutes on 29 October.
TraderTraitor is believed to be part of Lazarus Group, the same crew behind the 2025 Bybit heist and the 2014 Sony Pictures attack.
The FBI warned that hackers are converting stolen assets into Ethereum and preparing for "further laundering stages" through DeFi platforms and instant-swap services.
Binance says it has already replenished 90% of stolen funds from company reserves and promises customers will be fully reimbursed.
