Older people are urged to get their flu jab after nearly 4,000 deaths in England last winter

UK Health Security Agency modelling puts flu excess deaths at 3,798, even though jabs prevented an estimated 7,100 deaths and 104,000 hospital admissions. Adult vaccine effectiveness fell to between 21% and 34%. Flu cases are low for now, but September admissions were higher than in any of the last four years. Age UK's Caroline Abrahams warned older people not to get complacent.

Abrahams said flu 'should never be dismissed as just a bad cold' in later life.

The RSV jab was about 82% effective at keeping adults aged 75 to 79 out of hospital.

The children's flu vaccine worked far better, with effectiveness of 51% to 68%.
